New app 'The Backseat' aims to protect parents from leaving kids in hot cars

As the temperatures climb this summer, so does the risk of children dying from being left in hot cars.

A new tool, an application called "The Backseat," developed by a father in Arizona, is looking to drive down that risk.

"It's very hot in Florida, and you don't ever want to forget your kids in the car," said mom Rebecca Ferguson.

Parents and caregivers alike know the risk that the heat in Southwest Florida poses to little ones in the car.

"The Backseat" app is aimed at preventing hot car injuries and deaths.

Once you download it, the app automatically starts up as you begin driving over a certain speed that you can customize.

"It's a great idea," said Ferguson.

The app will detect when the car stops moving, and after a certain amount of time that you set (between 3-6 minutes) the app will send you notifications -- to make sure that you took any children out of the car with you.

"That sounds like it would be very helpful for people who have their forgetful moments," said mom Rachel James.

If you don't open your phone and turn off the notification within a few minutes, an alarm will go off, even if your phone is on silent.

"Sometimes we have a lot on our mind and just having a simple reminder about 'hey, don't forget the most important thing in your life' on your phone where you're probably gonna see it or hear it is a great idea. It's very smart," said Ferguson.

The app also sends out texts and emails to three people that you choose with the GPS of the car's location so that they can take action if need be.

"I think that would be very very helpful to parents and busy people and babies everywhere," said James.

Both James and Ferguson said they'll download the app because you can never be too careful.

"Why not? I'll download it, but I don't think I'll ever leave my baby in the car. But you never know. Better safe than sorry," said James.

One child has already died this year in Miami after being left in a hot car.

'The Backseat' app is free to download and is available for iPhone and Android.
