Naples football eyes state title after semifinal appearance in 2017

Coming off their second state semifinal appearance in three seasons, not much has changed for Naples heading into the 2018 season.

“We are really determined. That is our goal, a state championship," said senior linebacker Marc Viechec.

The Golden Eagles return 15 starters from last season's Final Four team, which means expectations for Bill Kramer's squad are high, per usual.

“We’ve got a bunch of guys back, a very veteran squad," Kramer said.

''I mean, we’re not going to go backward. So the goal for everyone, as it usually is at Naples High School, is more of an intensity about getting to the state finals this year.”

The sky also seems to be the limit for an experienced defense that looks to take its place in the program's record books.

“I Think we have the best defense in the state of Florida, to be honest with you," said junior tight end Dominic Mammarelli.

“Our defense is really really organized," said Viechec.

"We all know what to do, and we’re older now. Last year we had sophomores and juniors, we didn’t have many seniors. We know what to do this year.”

Back for just his second year of organized football, and already committed to play for the University of Miami, Mammarelli expects to be a big part of the Eagles offense at tight end.

“He is a guy the defense must account for," said Kramer.

“I’m just trying to make those big-time plays, I guess, whenever they need me to do something like that," reiterated Mammarelli.

Friday the Eagles wrapped up their second full week of practice.

On Aug. 17, Naples will get to put their pads to good use with a preseason game against North Fort Myers.
