CAPE CORAL, Fla. -

A Cape Coral family was startled awake by a man trying to break into their home.

Nicasio Schaar, 29, was arrested for a DUI, DUI with property damage, leaving the scene of an accident, and loitering or prowling.

"I turned over to my back french doors and all of the sudden I see the silhouette of a man running in my backyard," said homeowner Annique Jordan.

Annique said it happened around 2:30 a.m.

"I immediately woke my husband up. By that time the gentleman was on our back patio," she said.

Annique said the man was pounding on her doors, trying all of them.

She said she jumped up, called 911 and then took her family and hid in her son's room.

"I was asleep, and then all I hear is, 'Jarred, wake up! There’s somebody trying to get in the house,' " said Jarred Jordan.

Shortly after that, Jordan said he heard the police arrive.

"All I hear is Cape Coral police, get down, get down [next thing] cops are on the porch holding this guy down," he said.

The family said they later learned that the man was trying to escape from an earlier accident.

"His intentions were not to burglarize, which we did not find out of course until afterward," she said.

Cape Coral Police told her that the man crashed his car into a fence down the street earlier.

"Apparently he came to us for refuge, and he didn’t find that," said Annique.

Annique said the man had been mumbling inaudibly.

"I’m sure that alcohol was used in the making of this incident, but I’m sure there might have been other things as well," she said.

Schaar has since bonded out of jail.
