Governor appoints Carmine Marceno as Lee County Sheriff

Updated:

Governor Rick Scott appointed Lee County Undersheriff Carmine Marceno to replace retiring Sheriff Mike Scott.

Mike Scott had recommended Marceno's appointment to the governor. It was made official Friday, according to a spokesperson for the governor's office.

Marceno will serve as Lee County Sheriff until the next election in 2020, and he plans to run for the office in that race.

Marceno has been with the Lee County Sheriff's Office since 2013. He began his law enforcement career in 1996 in New York, and then spent a decade with the Collier County Sheriff's Office.

"He's been handling day-to-day operations for some time now," Mike Scott said of Marceno, when he made the announcement that he was retiring.

He added that Marceno has his full trust in his ability to run the agency.

"Carmine and I are on the same page - the citizens come first," Scott said.

Scott's retirement is effective Monday.
