ESTERO, Fla. -

Police arrested a maintenance man after he broke into an apartment and stood over his victim's bed while she slept.

The nightmarish incident happened at The Tides at Pelican Landing community around 3 a.m. Saturday.

Lee County deputies arrested 35-year-old Gustavo Alvarenga-Castaneda after he admitted to using his master key to get inside. The victim's young daughter was in the other bedroom.

According to Alvarenga-Castaneda's arrest report, he told deputies he had been talking to the victim as friends, and thought she wanted more out of their friendship. He woke her up with a kiss and said he wanted to surprise her, but was immediately kicked out and told that he'd be reported to the authorities.

Alvarenga-Castaneda, as well as other maintenance employees, have access to all units in the community where remodeling work is taking place.

Several residents said they're alarmed this happened inside their gated community, and are now worried about security.

"It’s been scary, because we’ve had so many people coming in and out, and you can't possibly screen everyone," Marcella D’Antuono said.

“I’m just upset that we facilitated it by making his entry easier than it could’ve been. We need better control over our contractors and their access into the apartments," John Mayberry said.

Alvarenga-Castaneda is facing a burglary with assault/battery charge and has an active ICE warrant for deportation. He is currently in custody at the Lee County Jail.
