BONITA SPRINGS, Fla. -

Deputies arrested the neighbor of a Bonita Springs woman whose cat named Daisy was hit with a crossbow arrow.

Mark Hamel, 65, was arrested after deputies executed a search warrant at his home and found a mini crossbow and multiple arrows that matched the one that hit the cat.

Dori Lopriore said she woke up Friday morning and found her cat lying helplessly on her back porch.

“My first thought was someone tried to kill my animal,” said Lopriore.

She rushed Daisy to the Animal Hospital of Bonita where she had surgery to repair three tears in her intestines.

“When you see something like this, it’s just so shocking, and also there was blood everywhere,” said Dr. Linda Kitchen, Veterinarian.

Lopriore is a licensed animal rescuer and said she takes in ferrel, handicapped, and elderly cats.

She said the story gets darker. This isn’t the first time she’s seen an animal near her home get impaled.

“I have seen squirrels running by me with arrows sticking out of them,” she said.

“I’m a loaded bear, and I’m coming to get [them], and I’m going to see him arrested,” said Lopriore.

Just days after the attack, she got her wish as Hamel was arrested, but not just for what he's accused of doing to her cat.

Inside Hamel's home, along with the crossbow and arrows, was more than two pounds of marijuana and more than 30 grams of edibles.

He's been charged with animal cruelty, possession of marijuana, and possession of a controlled substance.

Dr. Kitchen said Daisy would be in the hospital for a few days on pain medication and fluids. She is also watching to make sure the cat doesn’t develop an infection.

Lee County deputies said the cat is expected to make a full recovery.
