LEE COUNTY, Fla. -

Funny money keeps circulating in Southwest Florida hurting businesses and potentially your wallet.

In the last week, there were at least six cases where the counterfeit currency was collected at businesses across Lee County.

The most recent cases happened at a Fort Myers Tijuana Flats and the Coconut Point Mall Apple store in Estero. In both cases, a crook used phony $100 bills to make purchases.

Management from both stores reported the incident to deputies after realizing the currency they received was fake, but it was too late. The crook made out with more than $400 worth of goods at the Apple store, and another crook took off with a $100 Tijuana Flats gift card.

Experts recommend inspecting bills closely to ensure they are legitimate, and to report any counterfeit currency immediately to help stop the spread.
