Gina Mitchell is a runner, a mother and an Air Force veteran. She's also fuming after getting an email that the Fort Myers Marathon scheduled for November 4 was canceled.
She's not alone. On Facebook, one person said runners are a passionate group and, "to have the same individual take advantage of that time after time is simply a betrayal we will not forget."
The individual is John Mathews, race director of the Fort Myers Marathon.
The NBC2 Investigators have now run several stories about Mathews' failed races and unpaid bills. Last Monday he said that the permits for the last scheduled marathon in March, which was also canceled, would be rolled over to the November race. Both Fort Myers and Lee County officials denied that was the case.
In his latest email to runners Mathews wrote that construction delays with the downtown hotel cause too many safety concerns. He also wrote that he had been trying to locate other courses outside the city but came up with nothing.
We double checked Mathews' claim and emailed officials in Fort Myers, Lee County, Cape Coral and the Florida Department of Transportation. They all said he was not in contact and had not filed permits.
"The city did not receive a permit application for a November 4 race and thus downtown construction was not relevant to the cancellation of the marathon," a Fort Myers spokesperson said.
